I’ve stocked up both of the boutiques that carry SoCoDivka Designs this week! Lovely Austin on South 1st Street in South Austin has thirty pairs of new earrings and several new necklaces and Csilla Wear on Congress in downtown Austin has almost thirty pairs of new earrings and fifteen new necklace designs!
What do you think of the idea of work/life balance? Is it something you find yourself striving for?
What are you going to do to start better balancing your inner life so you can stress less and not feel spread so thin?
In the last week, the subject of balance keeps coming up everywhere I turn. I guess we are all seeking the same thing and it’s very much in the collective consciousness. From the series above on The Maven Circle, to the Creative Live session, Work. Life. Balance. I tuned into yesterday.
Sometimes, I don’t even know what I need until the universe beats me over the head with it and my body shuts down on me to the point I have to listen. Sometimes I need those reminders loud and clear, likely partially due to my stubborn nature. Even though I ditched the boss and the 9-5 just over five weeks ago, and now I am my own boss, and I need to treat myself like the boss I’d always wished I’d had. I need to allow myself days off and set hours… Twelve-hour days do not have to be the norm! I need to allow myself time for self-care: good food (heck some days remembering to eat!), exercise, and time to do the things that make me happy and see the people who make my heart sing! I thought gaining 40 hours (plus almost 10 hours in commute time!) a week would automatically lead to balance, but I am realizing I need to actively, consciously create it in my life.
Lately, even trying to plan a small vacation to Portland to see friends around our wedding videography dates, selling my jewelry at craft shows, and my husband’s video production work (now that the sports season is ramping up) has proven impossible… It’s either claim some time and declare it our own and make it happen or wait ’til January! (I don’t imagine Portland is nice in January; the original goal was to escape the Texas 110+ degree heat!)
I think when you’re in a creative field, trying to make a life out of doing what you love for a living, sometimes you’re so engaged in what you are working on, you can forget to take time to slow down, reflect, enjoy, play, and really take time for yourself.
I met with an acupuncturist friend this week–my inner voice kept telling me I needed to go see her for some migraine and fibromyalgia stuff I’ve been struggling with. Spending time with her was a wonderful way to remind myself to slow down and take care of myself: from shifting my sleep, to taking healthy supplements like essential fatty acids and probiotics, to cutting out all the grains, processed, and refined crap from my diet almost entirely, meditating, taking epsom baths, and most importantly drinking massive amounts of water. It was a nice, gentle reminder–like, “Hey, you know all this stuff, but listen to your body and take care of yourself, silly!”
Plus I am trying to add in a little time for play. Today, I took a couple hours off and went thrifting (or treasure hunting as I like to call it), and scored a display for my craft show (after a little creative re-use) and an awesome vintage 1976 Avon ring for just a dollar!
I am feeling better already.
Jena shared some great routine tips on her blog a while back–I just re-read them, and they are great reminders for those who work from home. I also love this guest post from Queen Bee‘s Rebecca Pearcy.
In honor of Friday the 13th – a day I consider quite lucky due to the fact I got engaged on a Friday the 13th (and always seem to have lucky things happen oddly enough), I am offering free shipping (domestic) in my shop all weekend! Use code “LUCKY13” in my etsy shop at checkout!
I’ve launched a new collection of jewelry for the summer/fall for SoCoDivka Designs called Natural Geometry. I’ve been inspired by the geometrical graphic designs everywhere these days–arrows, triangles, chevrons–and using natural stones in my designs. These designs had been brewing in my head from quite some time, along with the name, a phrase I kept hearing in my mind time and time again, but it was a matter of carving out a little time to sit down at my work table and realize them.
In early June, we traveled to film a wedding in Cherokee Country, Oklahoma (so gorgeously beautiful, so lush and green!) and being in an area of such historical significance to my ancestors really resonated within me and inspired me… When I got home from that trip, this new line was finally born.
Designs are available online and a limited edition is available at Csilla Wear in Austin.
Lots has happened since I last talked to you! I am taking SoCoDivka Designs, Nostalgia Film, and my web design business full-time! That’s right, I am now a full-time maker: of jewelry and accessories, films and videos, and web sites! It’s been exciting and totally scary all at once! I have longed for the last few years to fully utilize my creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, so I am giving it a go!
In other news…
SoCoDivka Designs is now being carried at Csilla Wear at 504 Congress Ave., Suite 100, Austin, TX 78701! Csilla is a clothing designer, recently relocated to Austin from NYC.
